But parenting can be a tremendous challenge, and for some, when combined with the stresses of poverty, it creates an unhealthy and sometimes unstable family life. In New York, children living under the poverty line are 5x more likely to experience familial instability. That’s why one of the most important things we do is provide parents and guardians in crisis with the supports to lead their families so that their children can thrive.
Children’s Aid focuses on an array of supports — from intimate partner violence intervention to family stabilization programs — to help families stay together whenever possible.

Tailoring our services to each family’s needs, Children’s Aid will come alongside a family to address conflict, abuse, neglect, truancy, behavioral issues, substance abuse, domestic violence, housing, and other household problems exacerbated by poverty. By focusing on preventing issues from escalating and eliminating harmful behaviors, Children’s Aid provides the tools families need to avoid foster care, stay united, and help their children succeed.
But sometimes, additional measures need to be taken for the safety of the children when interventions don’t curb the issues. In these cases, Children’s Aid places the children with supportive foster care families to help them flourish while we continue to work with the birth family to make the home safe for reunification with their children. If reunification isn’t possible, we then work toward other long-term permanent solutions, like adoption. Regardless of the goal or outcome, during the time a youth is in our care, they have access to Children’s Aid’s network of 100-plus academic, health, and leadership programs to help them grow and develop.
