Empowering children to success for 170 years
Throughout our history, Children’s Aid has been knocking down the barriers that young people face in fulfilling their potential. We have stayed effective by adapting to the changing nature of poverty and continually seeking out avenues of improvement. Over the years, this work has helped reduce the child poverty rate in New York City, but with nearly 1 in 4 city children still living in poverty, we have much more work to do.
Our legacy of innovation includes:
- Creating the model that led to the modern U.S. foster care system.
- Establishing the model of home-based health services.
- Opening the first day nursery so women could join the workforce.
- Introducing the first medical foster care.
- Founding some of the first community schools at P.S. 5 and I.S. 218, the strategy now adopted by more than 16,000 schools worldwide.
Today, Children’s Aid provides a comprehensive network of more than 100 programs in 40 locations designed to help children and young people learn, grow, and become leaders of their own lives. At our core, we are innovators, and as long as the need exists, we will continue building on our legacy.
